Overview
Queenstown Hill (Te Tapu-nui) rises 907 metres above sea level directly behind the town centre, offering one of the best free viewpoints in the region. The well-marked track climbs through Douglas fir forest to a summit with 360-degree views.
Highlights
- Time Walk: An interpretive trail with markers spanning geological time from 500 million years ago to the present, providing context for the landscape below.
- Basket of Dreams: A large woven sculpture at the summit where hikers can leave written wishes — a quirky local tradition.
- 360° Panorama: Unobstructed views of Lake Wakatipu, the Remarkables, Cecil Peak, Coronet Peak, and the distant peaks of Mount Aspiring National Park.
History
The hill was known as Te Tapu-nui to Ngai Tahu Maori. The walking track was developed in the 1990s and enhanced with the Time Walk interpretive markers in 2000. The Basket of Dreams sculpture was installed in 2010.
