Overview
Lake Wakatipu is a stunningly clear, S-shaped glacial lake stretching 80 kilometres through the Queenstown Basin. Its distinctive indigo-blue waters rise and fall approximately 12 centimetres every few minutes — a phenomenon Maori attributed to the heartbeat of a sleeping giant.
Highlights
- Crystal Clarity: The lake is among the purest in New Zealand, with visibility reaching 10 metres in places.
- The Seiche: The mysterious 26-minute oscillation in water level is caused by a standing wave (seiche) — scientifically explained but still magical.
- Mountain Backdrop: The Remarkables range and Cecil Peak create a dramatic amphitheatre around the lake.
History
Maori legend tells of a giant called Matau who was set alight by a brave warrior. The giant's body burned into the earth, forming the lake's S-shape, and his heart still beats — causing the water's rhythmic rise and fall. Geologically, the lake was carved by glaciers during the last ice age.
Visitor Tips
- Water Temperature: The lake averages 8–14°C year-round — swimming is bracing but exhilarating.
- Lakeside Walk: The flat waterfront path from Queenstown Gardens to Frankton is a beautiful 7km walk or cycle.
- Duration: 1–1.5 hours for a lakeside walk.
