Overview
Glenorchy is a tiny settlement at the northern head of Lake Wakatipu, 45 minutes' drive from Queenstown along one of New Zealand's most scenic roads. It serves as the gateway to several Great Walks and was a key filming location for the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Highlights
- The Drive: The 45-minute road from Queenstown hugs the lake shore with continuous mountain views — ranked among the world's most beautiful drives.
- Lord of the Rings Locations: The nearby Paradise Valley, Dart River delta, and surrounding beech forests were used for Isengard, Lothlórien, and Ithilien.
- Lagoon Walk: A short boardwalk trail through wetlands at the head of the lake offers reflections of surrounding peaks.
History
Glenorchy was settled in the 1860s during the Otago gold rush and later became a farming and logging centre. The name comes from Glen Orchy in the Scottish Highlands. Its film fame began when Peter Jackson chose the area for extensive Lord of the Rings location shooting in 1999–2000.
