Overview
Ben Lomond (1,748m) is the dominant peak towering directly above Queenstown. The challenging track climbs nearly 1,500 vertical metres from the town to the summit, rewarding hikers with one of the most spectacular 360-degree panoramas in the Southern Alps.
Highlights
- Summit Views: From the top, the view extends across Lake Wakatipu, the Remarkables, Cecil Peak, Coronet Peak, and on clear days to Mount Aspiring and even Mount Cook.
- Ben Lomond Saddle: The saddle at 1,326m makes an excellent shorter destination for those not attempting the summit, with views nearly as impressive.
- Alpine Environment: Above the treeline, the track crosses tussock grasslands with native alpine plants and occasional encounters with kea.
History
Named after Loch Lomond in Scotland by early European settlers drawn to the area by the 1862 gold rush. The track follows old stock routes used by early sheep farmers to access high-country grazing.
