Overview
Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park protects the forested hills on Kathmandu's northern rim, providing the city's main water supply and a wilderness escape just 12 km from the center. The park reaches 2,732 meters at Shivapuri Peak.
Highlights
- Shivapuri Peak Hike: A half-day trek to the summit with views of Langtang, Ganesh Himal, and the Kathmandu Valley.
- Forest Trails: Dense subtropical and temperate forests home to leopards, jungle cats, and over 300 bird species.
- Buddhist Monastery: The Nagi Gompa nunnery, perched on a ridge inside the park, offers meditation retreats.
History
Declared a national park in 2002, Shivapuri has long been a sacred site. A Shiva shrine sits at the summit. The park protects the watershed for Kathmandu's Sundarijal and Bishnumati water supplies.
Visitor Tips
- Tip 1: Enter from the Sundarijal gate for the most scenic trail and waterfall.
- Tip 2: Start early — the gate opens at 6 AM and afternoon clouds often obscure views.
- Duration: 3–5 hours.
