Pharping Monastery Area

Overview

Pharping is a sacred pilgrimage site south of Kathmandu containing multiple Buddhist and Hindu temples in a hillside setting. It is particularly revered as the place where Guru Padmasambhava attained enlightenment, with meditation caves and monasteries marking the event.

• Asura Cave: The cave where Guru Rinpoche is said to have meditated and achieved realization, with a famous self-arising face imprint in rock.
• Yangleshö Cave: Another sacred meditation cave with Tibetan Buddhist shrines and butter lamp offerings.

History

Pharping has been a sacred site for over a millennium. The caves are associated with the 8th-century Indian master Padmasambhava, who introduced Buddhism to Tibet. Multiple Tibetan Buddhist lineages have established monasteries here.
