Overview
Patan Durbar Square, in the city of Lalitpur just south of Kathmandu, is considered the finest example of Newari architecture in Nepal. The compact square is densely packed with temples, a stunning royal palace, and stone sculptures from the medieval Malla era.

History
Patan, historically known as Lalitpur ('City of Fine Arts'), was one of three rival Malla kingdoms. The square took shape between the 14th and 18th centuries. UNESCO listed it in 1979.

- Tip 1: Combine your visit with the excellent Patan Museum inside the palace.
- Tip 2: Less crowded than Kathmandu's Durbar Square with a more intimate atmosphere.
