Overview
Nyatapola Temple is the tallest pagoda-style temple in Nepal, rising five stories above Bhaktapur's Taumadhi Square. Its perfectly proportioned tiers and guardian statues make it one of the most architecturally impressive structures in the valley.
Highlights
- Five-Tiered Pagoda: Each of the five roofs represents one of the five basic elements, rising 30 meters.
- Guardian Pairs: Five pairs of increasingly powerful guardians line the stairway.
- Earthquake Resilience: The temple survived both the 1934 and 2015 earthquakes virtually intact.
History
Built in 1702 by King Bhupatindra Malla in just five months. Dedicated to the tantric goddess Siddhi Lakshmi, whose image is seen only by priests.
