Overview
Kirtipur is a historic hilltop town southwest of Kathmandu, one of the valley's oldest settlements. Largely untouristed, this medieval Newari town offers authentic architecture, quiet temples, and sweeping views without the crowds of the three Durbar Squares.
Highlights
- Bagh Bhairab Temple: A hilltop temple with shields and swords from the Gorkha conquest embedded in its walls.
- Uma Maheshwar Temple: A pagoda-style temple with panoramic views of the Kathmandu Valley and Himalayas.
- Medieval Streets: Narrow brick lanes with traditional Newari houses and carved wooden windows.
History
Kirtipur was an independent Newari city-state that resisted the Gorkha conquest. After two failed sieges, Prithvi Narayan Shah captured it in 1767 and reportedly punished the inhabitants by cutting off their noses and lips.
Visitor Tips
- Tip 1: Come for the views and the quiet — Kirtipur sees a fraction of the tourists that the Durbar Squares do.
- Tip 2: Try Newari food at local restaurants — especially the famous Newari feast (samay baji).
