Overview
Dakshinkali Temple is one of Nepal's most important Shakti temples, located in a forested gorge 22 km south of Kathmandu. Dedicated to the goddess Kali, it is known for its animal sacrifice rituals, particularly on Tuesdays and Saturdays.
Highlights
- Temple Gorge Setting: The temple sits at the confluence of two streams in a dramatic, forested ravine.
- Sacrifice Rituals: Devotees offer roosters and goats to Kali — a visceral cultural experience (not for the squeamish).
- Picnic Grounds: Families gather in the surrounding forest for picnics after worship.
History
The temple's origins are ancient, with the current structure dating to the 14th century. Legend holds that King Pratap Malla dreamed of the goddess and established her worship here. It remains one of the most active Shakti peethas in Nepal.
