Overview
The Penang War Museum occupies a 1930s British military fortress on Bukit Batu Maung. The hilltop complex of tunnels, barracks, and observation posts has been preserved as a memorial to the Japanese occupation during World War II.
Highlights
- Underground Tunnels: A network includes ammunition rooms, a medical bay, and a command centre.
- Observation Posts: Hilltop bunkers with original gun emplacements offer views over the Penang Strait.
- Memorial Exhibits: Photographs and personal effects document the Japanese occupation.
History
The fortress was built in the 1930s as a defensive position. When the Japanese attacked in December 1941, it was used as a prison and execution site. Restored as a museum in 2002.
