The Zaisan Memorial is a Soviet-era monument perched on a hill south of the city centre, honouring Soviet and Mongolian soldiers who died in World War II and the Battle of Khalkhin Gol. Its vivid circular mosaic mural and unobstructed panoramic views make it one of Ulaanbaatar's must-visit spots.
The memorial was built in 1971 on the initiative of the Mongolian People's Republic to commemorate the alliance with the Soviet Union. The hillside was later developed with a giant Buddha statue and a tank memorial at the base.
