Overview
The National Sports Stadium (Naadam Stadium) is the venue for Mongolia's most important cultural event — the annual Naadam Festival, held every July. The stadium hosts the wrestling, archery, and horse-racing competitions that have defined Mongolian identity for centuries.
Highlights
- Naadam Festival (11–13 July): The 'Three Games of Men' — wrestling, archery, and horse racing — draw the entire nation.
- Opening ceremony: A spectacular pageant of traditional costumes, horse parades, and military displays.
- Year-round use: Outside Naadam, the stadium hosts football matches and occasional concerts.
History
The Naadam festival dates back to the Mongol Empire, when warriors competed in archery, wrestling, and horse racing. The current stadium was built in 1960 and renovated in 2006 for the 800th anniversary of the Mongol Empire.
Visitor Tips
- Tip 1: Book Naadam tickets well in advance — they sell out months ahead. July 11 opening ceremony is the most popular.
- Tip 2: If visiting outside July, the stadium area is still worth a walk for the architecture.
- Duration: 3–5 hours (during Naadam).
