Pansodan Street in downtown Yangon has become the city's unofficial gallery district, with several contemporary art spaces occupying upper floors of colonial-era buildings. The galleries showcase works by Myanmar's emerging and established artists, offering affordable art purchases and insight into the country's vibrant but under-recognised contemporary art scene.
The Pansodan gallery scene emerged in the 2010s as Myanmar opened up and a new generation of artists gained access to international artistic trends while drawing on rich Burmese visual traditions. Several gallery owners are former artists themselves who wanted to create exhibition spaces in the heart of the city.
