Yangon's Downtown Colonial Quarter contains Southeast Asia's largest concentration of colonial-era buildings — hundreds of Victorian, Edwardian, and Art Deco structures lining the grid streets laid out by the British in the 1850s. Walking through this area reveals a living museum of architectural heritage, from grand civic buildings to crumbling residential blocks with their distinctive Burmese-Indian-British hybrid character.
The British laid out Yangon's grid plan in the 1850s after conquering Lower Burma. Over the following decades, the city was transformed into one of the most important ports in the British Empire, and grand buildings were erected to reflect its status. After decades of neglect, the Yangon Heritage Trust has led conservation efforts since 2012.
