Overview
Port Hercules (Port Hercule) is Monaco's only deep-water port, a natural harbour used since ancient Greek times. Today it is famous for its rows of superyachts and as the backdrop to the Monaco Grand Prix starting grid.
Highlights
- Superyacht Watching: Some of the world's largest private yachts berth here, especially during the Monaco Yacht Show in September.
- Grand Prix Grid: The port's quay forms the start/finish straight of the F1 circuit; grandstands are erected along the waterfront each May.
- Evening Promenade: The quayside walk is lined with restaurants and offers views of Le Rocher and the Palace above.
History
Port Hercules has been used as a harbour since at least the 6th century BC when Phocaean Greeks named it Monoikos. The modern port was developed in the 19th century under Prince Charles III. It was expanded with a floating breakwater in 2002 to accommodate larger vessels.
