Galle Face Green is Colombo's most iconic public promenade — a 5-hectare ocean-front strip stretching 500 meters along the Indian Ocean. Locals gather here every evening for kite-flying, cricket, and snacking on freshly prepared isso wade (shrimp fritters) from street vendors.
Established in 1859 by Sir Henry Ward for horse racing and promenading, Galle Face Green is one of the oldest public spaces in Asia. The name refers to the fortified walls of Galle, which the promenade once faced.
