Colombo Fort (Colombo 1) is the historic commercial center of the city, named after the Portuguese fortress that once occupied the promontory. Today it is a dense district of colonial-era government buildings, banks, luxury hotels, and the main railway terminus.
The Portuguese built a fort here in 1517; the Dutch expanded it with ramparts and moats in the 17th century. The British dismantled the fortifications in the 19th century but kept the name and developed the area as the administrative capital.
