Overview
Patuxai Park is the landscaped garden and public space that surrounds the Patuxai monument along Lane Xang Avenue, Vientiane's grandest boulevard. The park serves as a green oasis in the city centre and a gathering place for locals.
Highlights
- Musical Fountain: A China-donated musical fountain performs water-and-light shows in the evenings — a popular attraction for families.
- Lane Xang Avenue: The park anchors one end of Vientiane's Champs-Élysées-like boulevard, which stretches to the Presidential Palace.
- Shaded Walkways: Mature trees and benches offer a pleasant rest stop in the midday heat.
History
The park was developed in stages from the 1970s onward, with the musical fountain and landscaping additions donated by China in the 2000s. Lane Xang Avenue was designed during the French colonial period as a ceremonial axis modelled on Parisian boulevards.
