Sinpo International Market is one of Incheon's oldest and most beloved traditional markets, tracing its roots to the open-port era when foreign merchants traded alongside Korean vendors. Today it is best known as the birthplace of dakgangjeong — crispy fried chicken glazed in a sweet-spicy sauce — and for its lively street-food alleys.
The market dates to the 1890s when it served the open-port community. It evolved through the Japanese colonial period and the Korean War, and was rebuilt in its current covered form in the 1970s. The dakgangjeong specialty emerged in the 1970s and has since become a nationwide phenomenon.
