Phsar Thmei, known as the Central Market, is a striking 1937 Art Deco building designed by French architect Jean Desbois. Its distinctive yellow dome — one of the largest in the world at the time of construction — crowns four symmetrical wings that radiate outward like a cross.
Built on a former swamp that was drained and filled, the market was inaugurated in 1937 as the Grand Marché. It underwent a major renovation from 2009 to 2011 funded by the French Development Agency, restoring the dome and interior to their original condition.
