Mount Moiwa stands 531 meters above central Sapporo and is accessed by a ropeway and mini cable car to the summit observatory. The mountaintop is certified as one of Japan's 'New Three Great Night Views,' offering a vast panorama of the illuminated city grid stretching to the coast. In winter the snow-covered slopes add dramatic atmosphere.
Mount Moiwa's name comes from the Ainu word 'Inaw Nupuri,' meaning 'mountain where we gather offerings.' The original ropeway was installed in 1958 and completely rebuilt in 2011 with modern gondolas. The mountain has been a nighttime destination since the 1960s.
