Maruyama Park is a 68-hectare natural park centered on the 225-meter Mount Maruyama, preserving a primeval forest of Mongolian oaks and katsura trees within the city. It is one of Sapporo's premier cherry blossom and autumn foliage spots and features hiking trails, a small zoo, and the approach to Hokkaido Jingu Shrine.
The park's forest was designated a Natural Monument in 1921, protecting an old-growth ecosystem that has existed since before Sapporo's founding. The area served as an approach to Hokkaido Jingu Shrine and was formally established as a public park in the early 20th century.
