Jozankei Onsen

Overview

Jozankei Onsen is a hot spring resort valley located 26 km southwest of central Sapporo along the Toyohira River gorge. With over 50 hot spring sources feeding hotels and public bathhouses, it is one of Hokkaido's most accessible onsen destinations. The valley is renowned for its autumn foliage (mid-October) and the Kappa legends woven into the town's identity.

• Free Foot Baths: Multiple free ashiyu (foot baths) along the river promenade, including the Kappa-themed baths.
• Autumn Foliage (Koyo): The gorge erupts in red and gold maples from mid-October, best viewed from Futami Suspension Bridge.
• Kappa Statues: 23 whimsical kappa (water sprite) statues hidden throughout the town on a treasure-hunt trail.

History

A Zen monk named Miizumi Jozan discovered the hot springs in 1866, establishing the first bathhouse. The town grew as a retreat for Sapporo residents and has hosted visitors for over 150 years. The kappa folklore was adopted as a mascot in the 1930s.

• Tip 1: Free shuttle buses run from Sapporo Station — check schedules as they vary seasonally.
• Tip 2: If not staying overnight, look for day-use (higaeri) onsen plans at the major hotels (¥1,000–2,500).
