Sakurazaka is a hillside neighborhood just south of Kokusai Street that has emerged as Naha's quiet creative quarter. Steep lanes wind past indie bookshops, small galleries, and specialty coffee roasters, offering a mellow contrast to the tourist strip.
Named for the cherry trees that once lined its slopes, Sakurazaka developed as a residential area after the war. Its steep terrain and narrow lots made it less attractive for large-scale development, inadvertently preserving its village-like atmosphere. Over the past decade, young creatives have moved in, transforming empty houses into studios and shops.
