Naminoue Shrine (波上宮) is Okinawa's most important Shinto shrine, spectacularly perched on a coral cliff above Naminoue Beach. It is the highest-ranked shrine in the former Ryukyu Islands and a spiritual anchor for Naha.
The shrine's origins predate written records, though it was formally established during the Ryukyu Kingdom era. It was heavily damaged during the Battle of Okinawa in 1945 and rebuilt in its current form in 1953. The shrine deity, Nirai Kanai, reflects the Ryukyuan belief in a paradise beyond the sea.
