Kokusai Street (国際通り) is Naha's 1.6 km main shopping boulevard, stretching from the Prefectural Office to Makishi. Nicknamed the 'Miracle Mile' for its rapid reconstruction after World War II, the street buzzes with souvenir shops, restaurants, and live Okinawan music.
The street earned its 'international' name from the Ernie Pyle International Theatre, a post-war cinema built by the US military. After suffering near-total destruction in the Battle of Okinawa, the area rebuilt at astonishing speed and became the commercial heart of the city by the 1950s.
