Tenjin Underground City (Tenjin Chikagai) is a stylish 600-meter-long underground shopping promenade beneath Fukuoka's Tenjin district. With its European-inspired design featuring stone columns, warm lighting, and seasonal decorations, it feels more like an underground boulevard than a typical subway mall.
Tenjin Underground City opened in 1976 and underwent a major renovation in 2005 to achieve its current European-themed design. It was modeled after European shopping arcades and has become one of Kyushu's most popular underground shopping destinations, attracting over 400,000 visitors daily.
