Tenjin is Fukuoka's commercial and shopping heartland, a buzzing urban core packed with department stores, boutiques, electronics shops, and hundreds of restaurants. Named after the nearby Tenjin shrine (Suikyo Tenmangu), it serves as the gateway between the Hakata and Momochi areas.
Tenjin developed as a commercial district in the modern era around the terminus of the Nishitetsu railway line. The name comes from Suikyo Tenmangu, a small shrine dedicated to the same deity of learning as Dazaifu Tenmangu. Post-war reconstruction and the development of the underground city transformed it into Kyushu's largest commercial district.
