Sumiyoshi Shrine in Fukuoka is one of Japan's principal Sumiyoshi shrines, dedicated to deities who protect seafarers and travelers. Its distinctive Sumiyoshi-zukuri architectural style — with straight rooflines and cypress bark roofing — predates Chinese architectural influence on Japan.
The shrine's origins date to the 3rd century, making it one of the oldest in Japan. It is closely associated with Empress Jingu's legendary naval expedition to Korea. The current main hall was rebuilt in 1623 and designated an Important Cultural Property. The shrine served as the protector of Hakata's seafaring merchants.
