Nakasu is an island entertainment district sandwiched between the Naka and Hakata rivers in central Fukuoka. It is the largest entertainment district in western Japan, famous for its neon-lit streets, bustling yatai food stalls along the river, and vibrant nightlife scene that comes alive after dark.
Nakasu has been Fukuoka's entertainment center since the Edo period when it served as the commercial bridge between castle-town Fukuoka and merchant-town Hakata. The yatai tradition dates back to the post-war period when mobile food stalls served workers rebuilding the city. Today roughly 150 yatai are licensed to operate.
