Hakozaki Shrine is one of Japan's three great Hachiman shrines, dedicated to the god of war and martial arts. Its massive stone torii gate — one of Japan's three great torii — stands on the road leading from the seafront to the shrine, an imposing gateway dating from the Kamakura period.
Hakozaki Shrine was established in 923 AD and is closely associated with Japan's defense against the Mongol invasions of 1274 and 1281. The kamikaze storms that destroyed the Mongol fleets were attributed to the shrine's divine protection. The main hall was rebuilt by the Tokugawa shogunate in the 17th century.
