Hakata Old Town is the historic merchant quarter of Fukuoka, concentrated in the area around Hakata Station. Its narrow lanes wind past centuries-old temples, traditional craft workshops, and the soul of Hakata's merchant culture that once rivaled Kyoto in commercial importance.
Hakata has been a trading port since the 1st century AD, making it one of Japan's oldest commercial centers. The area was devastated during the wars of the 16th century but rebuilt under Toyotomi Hideyoshi's Taiko Machiwari urban plan of 1587, which established the grid pattern still visible today. The merchant guilds of Hakata were among the wealthiest in feudal Japan.
