History
The shrine was established in 905 AD over the grave of Sugawara no Michizane, a scholar-politician who died in exile in Dazaifu in 903 AD. According to legend, the ox carrying his coffin refused to move past this spot, marking it as his final resting place. The current main hall dates from 1591 and was rebuilt by the feudal lord Kobayakawa Takakage.
