History
Canal City Hakata was developed on a former textile factory site and opened in 1996 at a cost of ¥60 billion. Architect Jon Jerde designed it as a "city within a city" inspired by Mediterranean canal towns. The complex was expanded in 2011 with the East Building, and underwent a major renovation in 2018.
