Overview
Kumartuli is Kolkata's legendary artisan quarter where thousands of clay idol makers create the enormous effigies used during Durga Puja and other Hindu festivals.
Highlights
- Idol Workshops: Watch artisans building 10–15 foot tall clay goddesses from straw frame to final decoration.
- Pre-Puja Season: The weeks before Durga Puja (September–October) are the most spectacular time to visit.
- Living Heritage: A craft tradition that has continued in this neighborhood for over 300 years.
History
The name derives from "kumar" (potter) and "tuli" (locality). Potters settled here in the 18th century. Today, around 500 workshops produce idols shipped across India and the world.
