Overview
Kalighat Kali Temple is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas in Hindu tradition, believed to be where the toes of Goddess Sati's right foot fell. The present temple dates to 1809 and is the origin of Kolkata's name.

History
While legend dates the site to antiquity, the current temple was constructed in 1809 by Sabarna Roy Choudhury family. The surrounding area evolved into an important pilgrim center and eventually lent its name to the city of Calcutta.
