Vypeen Island Lighthouse

Overview

The Vypeen Lighthouse is an old Portuguese-era lighthouse on Vypeen Island, offering panoramic views of the Arabian Sea, the Kochi harbor entrance, and the surrounding islands from its observation platform. It is one of the few accessible lighthouses in Kerala.

History

A navigational light has marked this point on Vypeen Island since the Portuguese era in the 16th century, guiding ships into the Kochi harbor. The current lighthouse was built by the British and continues to function as an active navigational aid under the Directorate of Lighthouses and Lightships.

• Climb: The climb to the top involves a narrow staircase; not suitable for those with mobility issues.
• Getting there: Reached via ferry to Vypeen Island from Fort Kochi, followed by a short auto-rickshaw ride.
