Amer (also spelled Amber) is the historic town nestled at the base of Amber Fort, preceding Jaipur as the Kachwaha capital. Its narrow lanes are lined with old havelis, artisan workshops, and small temples, offering an unhurried glimpse into Rajasthan's pre-Jaipur history.
Amer was the capital of the Kachwaha Rajputs from the 11th century until 1727, when Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II moved the court to his new city of Jaipur. The town retains much of its medieval character, with temples and havelis dating from the 16th and 17th centuries.
