Albert Hall Museum

Overview

Albert Hall Museum (Government Central Museum) is Rajasthan's oldest museum, opened in 1887 and housed in a spectacular Indo-Saracenic building designed by Sir Swinton Jacob. Located in Ram Niwas Garden, its eclectic collection spans Egyptian mummies, Persian carpets, Rajasthani miniature paintings, and tribal jewelry.

• Egyptian Mummy: One of the few Egyptian mummies displayed in India, dating to around 600 BCE.
• Architecture: The ornate sandstone building features domes, arched windows, and frescoed ceilings inspired by the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
• Night Illumination: The building is beautifully lit after dark, making it equally impressive from outside.

History

The foundation stone was laid in 1876 during a visit by the Prince of Wales (later Edward VII), who also suggested it be named after himself. Designed by Colonel Sir Swinton Jacob for Maharaja Ram Singh II, the building was completed in 1887 and reorganised as a public museum.
