Abhaneri Stepwell (Day Trip)

Overview

Abhaneri is a day-trip destination about 95 km east of Jaipur, home to the extraordinary Chand Baori — one of the world's deepest and most visually spectacular stepwells. Its 3,500 steps descend 13 storeys in a perfect geometric pattern that has captivated visitors and filmmakers (it appeared in The Dark Knight Rises).

History

Chand Baori was built in the 9th century during the reign of King Chand of the Nikumbh dynasty. The stepwell was designed to harvest and store monsoon water in the arid Rajasthani climate. The depth of 19.5 metres made the water several degrees cooler than the surface, turning it into a communal gathering place.

Visitor Tips

• Day trip: Allow 2–3 hours for travel each way from Jaipur; combine with Fatehpur Sikri if continuing to Agra.
• Early start: Leave Jaipur by 7 AM to avoid the heat.
• Duration: 1 hour at the site, plus 2–3 hours driving each way.
