Mehrauli Archaeological Park Area

Overview

A sprawling archaeological zone in south Delhi surrounding the Qutub Minar, containing over 440 monuments from every era of Delhi's history — Rajput, Sultanate, Mughal, and British — scattered across forested parkland.

Highlights

• Balban's Tomb: Possibly the first true arch and dome in Indian architecture (1287).
• Jamali-Kamali Mosque and Tomb: A beautifully decorated 16th-century mosque with painted ceilings.
• Rajon ki Baoli: A five-level step-well with elaborate arcaded galleries.

History

Mehrauli is the site of the first Islamic settlement in Delhi. After the Ghurid conquest in 1192, it became the nucleus of the Delhi Sultanate. The park was designated by the ASI and the Aga Khan Trust.

Visitor Tips

• Off the beaten path: Most tourists visit only Qutub Minar — the surrounding park is a hidden gem.
• Morning walk: Cover the park on a 2-hour heritage walk.
• Duration: 1.5–2 hours.
