India's largest mosque, built by Shah Jahan between 1644 and 1656 with a courtyard that can hold 25,000 worshippers. Constructed of red sandstone and white marble, it stands opposite the Red Fort in Old Delhi.
Emperor Shah Jahan ordered its construction in 1644, employing 5,000 workers and spending one million rupees. Called Masjid-i-Jahān-Numā ("mosque commanding a view of the world"), it was the final architectural project of Shah Jahan's reign.
