Tomb of Salim Chishti

Overview

The Tomb of Salim Chishti is a revered Sufi shrine enclosed within the courtyard of the Jama Masjid at Fatehpur Sikri. The dazzling white marble structure — originally in red sandstone — was rebuilt in marble by Jahangir and remains an active pilgrimage site.

History

Salim Chishti was the Sufi saint who predicted the birth of Akbar's heir, Prince Salim (later Emperor Jahangir). Akbar built Fatehpur Sikri around the saint's dwelling place. The original red sandstone tomb was clad in marble around 1580.
