The Taj East Gate Area (Taj Ganj) is the bustling traveller district that has grown up around the eastern entrance to the Taj Mahal. Its narrow lanes are packed with budget guesthouses, rooftop cafés, souvenir shops, and street-food stalls.
Taj Ganj was historically the service quarter for the Taj Mahal complex, housing guards, craftsmen, and caretakers. Over the 20th century it evolved into a traveller ghetto similar to Kathmandu's Thamel or Bangkok's Khao San Road.
