Diwan-i-Am

Overview

The Diwan-i-Am (Hall of Public Audiences) inside Agra Fort is where the Mughal emperor held court to hear the grievances and petitions of common subjects. The open-pillared hall could accommodate hundreds of courtiers and petitioners.

History

Originally built by Akbar in red sandstone, it was significantly altered by Shah Jahan who added the white marble throne platform and decorative arches. The hall hosted daily public audiences during the Mughal period.
