Ullen Sentalu is widely regarded as Indonesia's best museum, set in the cool foothills of Mount Merapi. It preserves the cultural heritage of Java's royal courts through an intimate, guided-tour-only experience featuring batik, paintings, photographs, and personal effects of Javanese royalty.

History

Founded in 1994 by Haryono, a Javanese cultural patron, Ullen Sentalu takes its name from an old Javanese phrase meaning 'ulating blencong sejatining tataraning lumaku' — roughly, the light on life's journey. It was awarded the Indonesian Museum of the Year title and is recognised internationally for its innovative presentation.
