Taman Sari is an 18th-century royal garden complex built as a pleasure retreat for Sultan Hamengkubuwono I. Once featuring bathing pools, meditation chambers, and an artificial lake, it now stands as a romantic ruin surrounded by a vibrant artists' kampung famous for batik painting.
Completed in 1765, Taman Sari was designed by a Portuguese architect blending Javanese, Portuguese, and Chinese elements. The complex once included 57 buildings, a grand artificial lake, and underground waterways. Earthquakes and eruptions in the 19th century destroyed much of the original structure, and the area was gradually settled by local families.
