History
Established in 1935 by the Java Institute, a Dutch East Indies cultural society, the museum was built in traditional Javanese architectural style. Its collection was curated under the guidance of Dutch scholars and Javanese court officials, making it one of the most comprehensive pre-independence cultural archives in Java.
Visitor Tips
- Wayang performance: The evening shadow puppet show (small separate fee) is an unmissable experience.
- Air conditioning: The museum is not air-conditioned — visit in the morning when it's cooler.
- Duration: 45–60 minutes for the museum, plus 2 hours if staying for the wayang show.
