Prambanan is the largest Hindu temple compound in Indonesia and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built in the 9th century, the complex features soaring towers dedicated to the Hindu trinity — Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva — with the central Shiva temple rising 47 metres.
Constructed around 850 CE during the reign of the Hindu Sanjaya dynasty, Prambanan was likely a response to the Buddhist Borobudur built by the rival Sailendra dynasty. A major earthquake in the 16th century caused substantial collapse, and systematic restoration began in 1918 and continues today.
